Onde-Onde Aunties

Update (July 21): Oh yeah I forgot to mention that the aunties managed to extort 2000 rupiahs from me just so that I can take their photo. Thing that I'll do for photographs.....*shakes head* lol

There's a nice market to walk through at Tanah Lot, Bali. Pretty big but the shops sell practically the same things like clothes (branded and bali versions-ex: Bilabong and BALIbong). Its nice to walk around nontheless.

You need to be careful with the 'sales' they have though. This one Quicksilver shop was having a 50%-70% 'sale'. I got some pretty good bargain on shirts there but Ken Jon almost got ripped off on board shorts. Apparently the price tag shown is already the discounted ones, so just beware.

Somewhere near the initial part of the market you'll notice 5 ladies selling some kind of snacks, which would be called "Onde-Onde" in Malaysia. It has a chewy flour based textured ball with its middle filled with melted brown sugar. So when you bite into it the ball kinds of 'explodes' into your mouth as the brown sugar flows out.

I noticed that it came in two colour- green and dark brown. Never tried the brown one but Andrew and Ah Kit claims that it gives off a different kind of explosion- one that tastelike fart (??!). Hahahha, perhaps something to take note of if you ever come across this.

Love the 2nd and 4th photos:)
    Great perspective and close-up too!

    Do you draw Stanley?
Turn these shots into paintings, definitely look great!

My brother used to practise daily on this monkey bar (since he was in his secondary school until college), so no problem for him to do those stunts!

  7. OK! You have inspired me to really take up photography.
I thought of buying a SLR camera. Don't know where to start. Please give me some helpful advice.
Buy second hand or old model SLR camera OK or not?
    Thanks in advance!

By the way, congrats Stanley ....you are so young and have been to oversea already.
The last time, my first flight experience was when I met an accident, I travelled back from Kedah to KL....
I had been to other parts of Indonesia but not to Bali yet!
Travelling with a camera is so satisfying, capturing the greatest moment of us and others, unique way to leave footprints in our memories!

  8. Lizz, you noticed! HAHhah I was aiming for that actually when taking the photographs.

yoon see, xP I'm really flattered to hear that. Photography is a really wonderful and rewarding hobby. Btw, why an SLR camera? It shoots films right. I've read that its good in the LOONGGGGGG run because you need to be precise in EVERY shot. But I am and have always been using a DSLR, which is in digital where you save the pics like all normal digital cameras do-in a memory card. This actually allows you to be more adventurous with your shots, make more mistakes and learn from them. Afterall, you can delete shots that you don't like. About it being first hand/second hand I guess it doesn't really matter lor. As long as its in working quality it should be alright xP I would definitely recommend the camera that I'm using now which is a Nikon D90. You can get it for about Rm4000. But if you're tight on budget you can always go for the lower-end models which are just as good (the downside for me is that lower end cameras do not have built in autofocus engines so there are lenses that do not autofocus on them). And I always tell people who ask me to get a 50mm lens too =D It has great background blur which helps you isolate subjects. Most of the pictures you see here are taken with a 50mm lens. The best tip I can give you which my other friend gave me, is to keep on shooting! HAHAH you should have seen how I started out. Its a continuing learning process, where I am still learning too. Do check out other photographer's work on flickr or the ones that I linked on the right. You'll get an idea on how to compose your pictures and make use of the light and stuff. Oh yeah, and post-processing plays a huge part too in photography. So do experiment around in photoshop on how to bring out the colours in your photographs, to portray the mood you want. I see photoshop as a way to enhance, not repair a photograph so you need to have a good photograph to begin with. Hope this helps =D Don't hesitate to shoot more questions.

  12. yoon see, hahaha I actually find it flattering when people ask me for photography tips. Lol its like my hidung suddenly kembang. So I'll normally explain the best I can =D Well photography is the main hobby but I do enjoy a good book that comes along once in a while. Reading was my first love actually. Back in primary/lower secondary when the exam stress was not so apparent I would read and read sometimes in class too. Yes! And I'm into tv series as well. The ones that I follow are- Heroes, Alias (while it lasted), Big Bang Theory, Chuck, The Middleman, 30 Rock, Fringe at generally sitcoms for a good 30 minute laugh =D
