Skiing in China
Just as I hinted in my previous post, I will be talking a bit on my skiing experience in China. About that, I don't have much to say. I did had an EXPERIENCE. It wasn't exactly fun but I did had fun (do you get it??).
The ski resort that I was staying at. This is the place NOT the place to go if you ever go to Yabuli, which is located further up Harbin. My family thought that this place was good since they hosted the winter olympics there.
But the place was BADLY maintained, perhaps because its the beginning of winter and they are just opening. I had to bath in cold water! Imagine, the temperature there was way below -25 degrees. On the other hand, the service there was really good. Despite how much I did not like the place, the staff did try to make it up to us.
This was taken at the window of the restaurant. Surprisingly, the restaurant served really good food (I was really hungry too). The windmill out there is actually a chalet. Don't be tricked by its pleasant exterior. The INTERIOR is rotten and abandoned, therefore the hotel has decided not to rent them.
Here at this very hill lurks evil, EVIL!!! I know from the looks of it, it looks pretty harmless but I'll tell you more later in this post.
Here's my sister with her personal trainer. I think she did a better job than me, or she had a better trainer. She was the one who really enjoyed her skiing experience.
Here I am, helplessly trying to ski. Ok, lets recap and count the number of times I fell.
1st time : Right after putting on the skis, I tripped and fell on FLAT ground.
2nd time : Going up the hill, I fell down twice trying to get on the lift. Locals were laughing!
3rd time : Up the hill, I fell down trying to get OFF the lift.
4rd time : My trainer was guiding me down the slope. I did not "extend" my skis properly
and started to accelerate forward, and crashed right into her!
5th time : Halfway up the hill on the stupid lift. I did not have a good grip so I fell.
6th time : I finally got the hang of everything, so it was time for my solo run down the hill. Well, somehow I detoured to the right and crashed into the bushes. I always seemed to be able to turn right but NEVER turn left which was the BIG problem.
7th time : Thank God this was the LAST time I had an accident. I did not exactly fell but on another solo run down the hill, I went all the way down at full speed. Those who ski would know that your skis need to be opened wide in an "A" shape to slow down.
Well mine was more like an "H", my skis were parallel, so I was speeding all the way down the hill. It was a really frightening experience, feeling that you have not control on whats going to happen next.
Fine, it wasn't all that bad. I did have fun along the way. Falling down was actually pretty funny and something that I would remember for the rest of my life. (And also my mom took these shots of me and my sister, she's a pretty good photographer herself!)
My sister loved skiing so much she wanted to continue. But the day was ending and the snow have almost turned into ice, making it dangerous as it would be more slippery and harder to stop.
We chatted with a local later during the day and found out that we were cheated of our money. We practically paid more than half for everything. The local told us that there were many other better and cheaper ski slopes around which charged less than half of what we paid. Other "non-tourist" hotels were also much cheaper.
Sigh....so perhaps this could be a word of wisdom for all of your people who are planning your holidays there. Oh yeah...and one more thing. It gets dark by 5 o'clock so prepared to be damn bored in the evenings as there is no night live over there. All in all it was a pretty good experience. I would definitely take another shot at skiing if I ever get the chance.
Excellent Series! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying the photos of you learning to ski...I remember being there many years ago..Apalachian Ski Resort in North Carolina...we took lessons as well...I have never laughed so much in my life...very hard to get up once you fall down...eventually our instructor took us up the slope...I had no confidence in myself and was sure I could not stop once I began to come down the slope...and so the story goes...I ran into the instructor and together we slid a good way down the mountain :) Have fun...I love the photos of you and your sister..
ReplyDeleteFor the people, thanks lots! =)
ReplyDeleteDee dee, hahahah...sounds like your skiing experience was fun too! I guess we "first" time "ski-ers" experience the same things!
ReplyDeletenow that you're experienced, can you teach me?
ReplyDeleteHahhaha....i don't think I'm in the position to teach yet! LOLZ...unless you don't mind crashing down the hill together with me.... =)

ReplyDeletegreat shots, too!
ps. i don't know how to ski (no snow here in the tropics), but like you, i'd most probably have fallen dozens of times, too! ;p
thanks for the visit!
Hi stanley, thanks for coming over to my blog.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why my dog sat still so obediently is that D'Ora feels flatterd and enjoys every second when we are taking photos of her or when somebody is taking about her and complimenting on her.
It's no fun, she REALLY feels like that!
Your skiing photos are exciting!
..talking about her...
ReplyDeleteLearning to ski is not easy. I have only been on them once or twice and that was in Japan on Hokkaido when I was in the Army. You could put on skis and be pulled around through the snow by weasels. And that was fun if you stayed upright and hung onto the rope.
ReplyDeleteNice photographs.

Maiylah, thanks for coming! HHahhha.....yeah....falling was not as bad as it was because the soft snow actually blocked my fall. So the only thing "hurt" would be my pride...hahahahah. THe locals were laughing at me!
ReplyDeleteMaria, your dog is definitely oneof a kind! HAhahah....your dog must be one of those friendly kinds.
ReplyDeleteAbraham Lincoln, pulled by weasels?? You did that?? COOL!!! HAhahah....I really can't imagine that =) Must've been real cute. Thanks for stopping by again =)
ReplyDeleteHey, Stanley. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I think I've seen you one other time, too but my life's been crazy lately.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting series you've got going here!
Skiing was not for me, either. In high school, I went on 3 different skiing trips, thinking that eventually I would learn to ski and love it. Nothing doing. Now, ice skating I do love!
I'd like to tell you that of all the pictures, the one from the restaurant window in the rain was my favorite.
Country girl, thanks so much for dropping by! Its so nice to see you here.
ReplyDeleteYou ice-skate? Hahhahaha....my experience ice-skating was similar to skiing! But maybe perhaps it was because I did not have any real guidance that time. Do keep in touch =)
these are great photos! i love the 3rd one! and thanks for the the comment! (:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit. I have no clue why you were rejected since your blog is so nice.
ReplyDeleteIt does look as though you enjoyed yourself despite all of your mishaps. Thanks for stopping by my blog again. I enjoy the comments and visiting another site.
ReplyDeleteHey Stanley,
ReplyDeleteI saw your comments on "Country Girls" site and remembered that you had stopped by my blog once and I don't think I'd clicked back yet, so I decided to stop by and Wow, I love you photos, I'm very sorry I didn't come sooner.
I also appreciate your honesty about your skiing adventures. I live in Utah (home of the 2002 Winter Olympics) and I've NEVER been skiing. I'm a total chicken and won't try. So I admire your bravery and your honesty. I know it's not as easy as it looks.
I have you bookmarked now, so I'll be back.
I tried skiing once, too. It was only cross country skiing but I still got blisters on my hands from holding too tightly to the ski poles because I was afraid of falling. You might think it's because I'm from Hawaii but my nephew is an expert snow boarder. My son goes snow boarding and skiing all the time, too. They seem to prefer it. Maybe you could try that next. :-)
ReplyDeleteRachel, thanks for dropping by =)Glad that you like that shot.
ReplyDeleteChristy, hahahha....yeah all in all it was a good experience. Thanks for coming by!
ReplyDeleteChristy, hahahha....yeah all in all it was a good experience. Thanks for coming by!

ReplyDeleteHhhahaha....i do hope to be able to ski decently one day =) DO keep in touch.
Kay, you went cross country skiing??? WOW, thats awesome! And here I am struggling. HAhaha....lolz.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I will give snowboarding a try the next time.

ReplyDeleteHi Stanley thanks for visiting my new blog recently, I'm still in deciding wether to stay with Wordpress or change to blogger
ReplyDeleteTony thanks for stopping by! I personally find blogger REALLY easy to navigate but I've not tried wordpress yet. I highly reccomend blogger but it really depends on which one you are comfortable with =) And shifting readership would also be a hassle. Cheers!

HI, Stanley!
ReplyDeleteSkiing is one thing I would like to do in my life... I think no matter how many times you would fall, it is still lots of fun...
I'm so sorry you paid more than what you should in that skiing slope. You're train ride with the locals must also be exhilarating experience...
Awesome photos you got here in these posts...
Skiing and skiing.
ReplyDeleteI should call this type of skiing: “Downhill Skiing”. What I understand with real skiing is: "Nordic skiing". Anyway You are brave when trying to slalom.
Regards.
